Fresh saw dust as it decays, due to fungi, will absorb nitrogen from the
surrounding soil. The fungi can spread out a few inches away from the saw
dust. As the saw dust becomes depleted of the nutrients that the fungi and
bacteria are living on they die and the nitrogen is returned to the soil-some
is lost to the air. This process may take a year or a couple of years
depending on the type of saw dust and the size, larger pieces take longer
with wood shavings mixed with finer sizes the worst.
Once the wood is depleted it does become a good soil additive-improving
texture, but it should be well aged saw dust with the addition of extra
nitrogen it can be used in the garden with good results.
