Munchkin Nursery Tour

I know you all want to know what you missed today!

Right after 9 AM, Bill Lee and I headed toward Milltown, Indiana from
Cincinnati. Partly cloudy, lots of sun, no rain, cool day - beautiful
day! We arrived at Gene's before 11:30 and the tour began! JoAn was
directing a nephew in tree removal but did come spend a few minutes with
us. I can attest to the size of her clematis recta purpurea! She's
right, it could be divided, it's huge, and in the pot must stand 6 feet
tall and it's just started growing for the season!

Gene's woodland garden is marvelous! Situated on a small hill bisected
by a rock-lined stream bed, one path after another led to many unusual
things. The arisaema 'VooDoo' is the first thing you see, the spikes
must be 2 feet tall already. Right behind that is a magnificent weeping
spruce. Gene has given it all the space it wants and it has achieved a
graceful sprawl.

Too many beautiful things to mention but I can't resist saying:
the Bletilla was gorgeous - floating orchid-like blooms
and the peonies (Bill and I both liked 'Top Hat'),
and the ferns - the Bulblet Fern in abundance and wonderful by
the stream bed
and the geranium 'Wlassovianum' (Bill and I both took one home)
Joanne's hostas (I was particularly taken with her 'Patriot')
        the iris cristata 'White Angel'
the fire pinks (Silene Virginica) caught Bill's eye and he took
home a pot!
all sorts of Solomon seal - small, tall, different variegations
and so many Tricyrtis, one with lime foliage, well !!!!!!
and a Trillium vaseyi that was a knockout (I took home the last
pot!)
We saw a bluebird, woodpeckers, a catbird, and red winged blackbirds.

At some point we stopped for lunch and drove into town to the Blue River
Cafe. It was not disappointing. Bill had roast garlic soup and Gene and
I had clam chowder. The aroma as they came to the table was heavenly!
Great restaurant choice Gene! The town is charming BTW with the river
flowing through it. They have a canoe rental that was doing a big
business today. And I saw this sign: The Blue River Pottery and Bonsai
Company. We didn't go but it certainly sounds like a reason for another
trip.

Thanks Gene, it all made for a wonderful day.
Linda Wallpe
