Yes, both recover just fine. If the hostas look shaggy, cut them off at the
base, fertizile and they will return but be smaller than in previous years.
The irises have already begun new foliage here while the old leaves are
clipped off.
The roots don't seem to be harmed.
I don't know about woody plants, each will probably be different. They have
what are called adventitious buds behind the developed bud so most will be OK
even it takes half the summer. Don't cut down any freeze damaged woody plant
for a few months as it often returns just needing time to do so.
We are now into May 22 and it is still not safe for tender plants here. This
will be a June 01 year for my part of the country. We are supposed to get
warmer weather by the end of the week. What Paul gets in Minnesota usually
comes to us about two days later so Paul's reports are heralds for us.
Still, spring is better than winter and I am happy to see anything in the
garden growing. For all you plant sellers, hope you get a warm weekend so
that shoppers come out and buy plants. The spring sale period is so short
except for perennial list folks who buy plants any time they bump into them.
