Why didn't I think to look it up in the wildflower books. My Peterson's is
for Northeastern and north-central and it shows drawings of C. flavula,
aurea, and micrantha and they're very similar except for the flare at the end
of the bloom. I'm not sure there are any flowers left on this plant, but will
check if there are. Perhaps it was the accent that was making me call it C.
flava (the expert who identified it for me was visiting from his home in
Latvia).
