Buttercup is a real problem in names of plants because this simple common
name means so many different plants to so many people. This is where genus
and species names are so important, although I think this thread did start
with the genus and species, didn't it?
In the South there are even some daffodils that people refer to as
"buttercups"! I've heard Eranthis called "buttercups". It means many things
to many people, and often different things in different places.
