It looks like an Arum to me.  Maybe Arum maculatum?  Shiny leaves and
dark stem bases are similar....

Well, I guess the consensus is that it is likely Arum maculatum. Have no idea how it got there. They are not at all common here, although I see they are hardy to -20F. It seems that every now and then, one of these "strangers" pops up. Usually turns out to be some seed that I had tried germinating some years back, got tired of waiting and tossed the starting mix out into the garden, only to have the seed germinate when it was good and ready.
