I haven't heard that one, but I have heard a baby aspirin and daily
trimming of the cut stems helps lengthen keeping time, especially for
roses. Florists also have some kind of powder they use and sometimes
sell for the extending of cut flowers.
But personally, what I found the most amazingly successful strategy
for keeping roses was to make the bouquet of a size you can get into
the refrigerator, and to put them in there when you weren't going to
be around to admire them. They kept for me for nearly a month doing
that.
Dunno if any of this would be applicable to other flowers, but I
suspect it would.
