I've used to methods to great success:
1. A tuna can sunk to ground level and filled with cheap beer. Hide out of
sight under the plants and you should know the slugs die happy. I believe a
yeast and water mixture might work( yeast is the attraction in beer ) but that's
no fun.
2. I have 3 spray bottle strategically placed around the yard. the bottles
are filled with 4/5 parts water and one part regular household ammonia. I'm
told 10 to one works but I haven't tested it. One spray and the slug writhes in
pain, slowly writhing and decomposing; a beautiful thing. A little of this
mixture on plants doesn't hurt as ammonia is essentially a fertilizer. Far less
chemical use then the commercial slug baits.
And , of course, cultural practices will help keep the slug population down.
Take your pick; no mulch, no leaves laying around, nothing on the ground
that the little buggers can hide under....... Once you've practiced the above,
you'll have the slug population under control. And, oh yea, we have a few
toads to gather up the slugs we missed.
