They are actually not all that hard to pull out of moist clay,
either...that's what I do when they get where they aren't supposed to
be.  You're right, you gotta grab the crown at the soil line.  With
your loose soil, they should come right out and if you pot them, grow
on like nothing ever happened to them...tough plants.
