Squirrels do not eat ferns here. but dumb mice eat everything else. It is a war zone in woods.

I don't know why, but ferns just don't do very well for me. I have a few bunches of them, but they generally just languish.
The best one is Athyrium angustum forma rubellum 'Lady in Red'; Athyriums in general do pretty well. Ostrich fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris) does OK in sunnier spots, and autumn fern (Dryopteris erythrosora) is decent. Pretty much everything else has died.
A big part of it is squirrels. There's a giant pin oak in the backyard, so that means squirrels. They love to eat the emerging fronds on all of the ferns in the spring. :(
