Yes. My Mom taught me to use prickly needles (not like a white pine, but
actually more like the short spiky ones from a spruce). They seem to
work pretty well in her garden.
Would coarse sand work?
I'm going to have to do something this year against slugs too; they seem
to be everywhere. My poor little Melampodiums look like green swiss
cheese!
