Re: Hesperis Matronalis


In the past there have been double flowering varieties of this
plant-perhaps they would be rare enough to satisfy the rather fussy "plant
expert".  I'm not sure if any of them are still available ( I loaned the
book that mentioned them to someone and haven't gotten it back yet), but
they would be quite interesting.  I have the purple  single variety in my
part shade bed, under a mature maple where it  looks quite nice but only
seeds enough to keep a handful of plants blooming each year.  It hasn't
shown the slightest tendency to spread through the bed but stays in a clump
around the trunk.  I have seen huge fields full of both the purple and
white in the area, so obviously it can really cut loose if it's happy.
