Valerie,
I went to hear Tracy DiSabato-Aust this past winter, just after her book hit
the press and was I impressed! Her slides were fascinating, as was her
philosophy about pruning perennials. Bought the book, read it from cover to
cover and have started using some of her techniques. Nepeta siberica is a
favorite of mine, but it always flopped somewhat for me. Began pinching it
about 3 weeks ago and it is much bushier, shorter and will be easier for its
neighbors to grow. Have done the same with monarda, helenium and phlox.
Should make it much more manageable. I also like the fact that she gives
you other maintenance advice, not just on pruning.
Also thought I would try her suggestion for pruning one plant in several
different ways. Should make for longer blooming time and more bushiness.
Other than that, I need to sit and reread again. Was fascinating first time
around, when I was just dreaming about gardening. Now that summer is here,
not much time to reread. One book that I am really glad I bought.
