Hi Mimi,
I've put together a list of references that I've found to be
indispensable when dealing with perennials at
http://www.mallorn.com/bookstore/lists/perennials.cgi
For someone in your situation, Steven Still's book is a good
starting point, as are the Random House books by Roger Phillips
and Martyn Rix. Wyman's Gardening Encyclopedia is also pretty
darn good. If I had to get just one based on content, I'd
probably get Wyman -- it's indispensable and won't become
outdated as your experience grows.
Anyhow, there's a brief description available if you click
on any of the titles on that page. And of course, if you
order any through Amazon.com you'll be helping to pay for the
mailing list... :)
Chris
