No! Don't dig up the valerian just yet! It took them three years to look
their best and now that I have it, I won't give it away. It blooms right
after the tulips and at the beginning of the roses, giving me some color in
that awkward gap. It has an odd color, which happens to look great with
blues and yellows. Don't try it with pink...yuck! It's a good filler in
my bouquets and it presses well for such projects.
I try to keep it deadheaded, which will definitely prolong the bloom.
Otherwise, cut it back to it's basal foliage (the little mound of leaves at
the base from which all of the stems grow) and it will grow new leaves and
look pretty good. I can't say that it will rebloom 'cause mine hasn't
after I cut it back. Supposedly it reseeds like crazy, but I haven't had
one volunteer plant. Maybe it's because I mulch heavily...
Give all of your plants TIME. My garden looked like crap when I first
started, but over the years I been more and more pleased. I'm still not
entirely satisfied (but who is?), but it's coming along. Don't be like my
mom...she's wants a full-grown English cottage garden the first season.
Ain't gonna happen!
