Re: Heirloom plants/sentimental plants -Reply

How wonderful! You've definitely started the
grooming of a lifetime gardener! I'll keep my
eyes peeled for Kara plants! There is a plant,
Caryopteris, and beautiful blue shrub that
blooms late August, about 2 x 2 and the bees
adore it. There is also Kerria japonica, a large,
suckering shrub with either single yellow or
double golden flowers (depends on the variety).
This plant is great if you have room, it has
bright green stems in the winter and puts out
the leaves and flowers in March (here in the
PNW). Spangles of flowers the rest of the
summer as well. Takes everything from
complete shade to sun. Very easy. It does
sucker, tho!

Some of the plants I grow are purely for my
six-year-old's enjoyment. I
let her look through a catalog every year and
pick one or two plants out.
That plant goes to a corner of the yard known
as "Kara's Korner". It's
quite a fun, jumbly sort of thing. Everything is
bright and colorful. She
loves foxgloves, roses, johnny-jump-ups, shasta
daisies, hollyhocks, and
oriental lilies. This year we added tall blue
bellflowers and some asiatic
lilies. They all seem to work out quite well.

I let her pick her flowers anytime she wants for
a constant bouquet on her
night table. She also shows her friends HER
flowers. I figure I could
start a tradition with her. We've already
pressed some flowers for her to
make into bookmarks.

Anyone know of any plants with "Kara" in the
name? I can't find a blasted
one!! I grow Valerian for my name and the
johnny-jump-ups are for her
father, Johnny. I figure it would be neat to
have one for her.
