Zounds!!You should see my oriental poppy!(papaver water babies). It
opened yesterday and is just gorgeous. It is many shades of pink,
violet, plum etc. When my foxgloves appeared several days ago, I
raved loud and long about how magnificent they were and I think the
poppies heard and said"Hmph, I can do better than that". Don't tell
anyone but I'm trying to evoke a little spirit of friendly competition
amidst my blooms. If each one tries to outdo the others it should
make for a pretty jazzy garden. Lest my enthusiasm has you
visualizing a splashy blaze of color, let me bring you down to earth.
My foxgloves consist of 3 stalks ( is that what you call them) and I
have exactly one poppy flower. Hardly a "blaze of color". However,
there are several more plump, juicy looking buds on the poppy so I
have great expectations. When you're new at the perennial gardening
game, as I am, even one poppy is cause for rejoicing.
I told my shasta daisies to unpack their bags because I'm not moving
them again. I mentioned to my adenophora that it might be nice if
they would throw a "welcome to the neighborhood" party for them. The
poor little fellas have been moved around so much, their little
psyches might be damaged and we need to boost their self-esteem.
Did I mention that my sweet william are looking very nice? Nothing to
write home about, but still nice.
