Here's my take on the bearded Iris question. I have had unblooming
Irises for years. One or two early in the season and that was it - but
always great foliage. This year I began to fertilize my flowers for the
first time in my gardening life. I previously figured that if something
bloomed, I was lucky. A friend encouraged me to fertilize - whether
organically with compost, or with one of the myriad of flower boosters on
the market.
Sure enough - I have madly blooming Irises. I had miniatures bloom, the
medium (grape kool-aid smelling) lavender blooms and now the tall bearded
Irisies that show no end in sight to their blooms. I'm shocked, to say
the least.
I'm not giving all the credit to the fertilizer I chose, however. We've
had an exceedingly mild winter and spring which might have contributed to
my bounty. I have Zantedeschia (Calla Lillies) that I forgot to lift in
the fall, on the verge of flowering today. That's almost unheard of here
in the frozen tundra of Wisconsin (in an average year).
Just my two cents . . . .YMMV
