Whoa! Before you get "all het up" over White Flower Farm, I should tell
you that if you fill out one of those postcards that come in all of the
gardening magazines, you'll get the catalog for free. My sister called
them in the spring for a catalog, told them that she was thumbing through
an old one, and they sent her one for free. I guess it must be in how you
ask for one, but I don't know. I've received the best customer service
from them. Their staff horticulturist once researched a question I had
about one of their plants, calling me long distance a couple of times with
her response even though I didn't end up ordering that plant. They will
also issue a credit/new plant with no hassles if your plant fails to
thrive.

Admittedly, I find some of their prices appalling, too. To offset the
shock, occasionally they offer plant varieties that I haven't seen in other
catalogs and when you call them, be sure to ask what they have on special.
You'll end up getting some great deals on individual plants or collections.

What I do is thumb through their catalog with the beautiful glossy pictures
and then comparison shop with other catalogs. Don't give up on them yet.
Call back, explain that you have friends that have received the catalog for
free in the past and you would really like a copy yourself. If nothing
else, it is a good reference catalog for combination planting ideas and
other cultural information about individual plants.
