A few weeks ago I divided some of mine-- without removing the mother
plant from the ground, I stuck a spading fork into the middle and pried
out a nice big chunk. No muscle required, you get the dirt too so the
roots are relatively intact. I planted the divisions where I wanted them
and then filled in the holes next to the plants I took them from with new
dirt. Both mothers and babies are doing fine...
This is great for astilbes too, they are a real pain to divide if you
remove them from the ground first.
