A landscape guy I know, told me NEVER to add sand to my wonderful Missouri
clay. In our hot, humid summers, I will have wonderful concrete garden
paths, where I want blooms to grow! He says he always adds gypsum and peat
here in equal portions to the clay, then top dresses with compost and work
that in. Also to add compost in spring and fall and dig it in to 4-6". He
always uses a hard bark mulch. Keeps moisture in, and will break down in 2-3
years.
I have only done one of my beds faithfully like he told me too, and it is by
far the better soil! Can't argue with succuss! I now have about 5 inches of
great soil, which was originally dug down about 8 inches. I think the clay
works it way up to the top! Also the earth worms are thriving in this bed! I
love watching the robins here grab them up!
Can't believe the money I've spent on soil ammendments! My DH always knows
what to get me at any garden store! 40 lbs of gypsum and 40 lbs of peat!
