Lorraine,
I'm fairly new to the topic of heat zones. I understand the concept, but
personally am more concerned with overall climate than just heat. For my
area, hardiness in the winter and the ability to cope with humidity are the
biggest factors. Does the heat zone chart take humidity into concern? I
have a devil of a time trying to keep grey-leaved plants thriving in my
garden during the summers. Lamb's ear, artemisias, snow-in-summer and
lychnis (rose campion) get rotted out and die a slow death. All look great
in the spring and then come mid-summer, I'm regretting ever having them.
Unfortunately, the lamb's ear always comes back in the fall looking
spectacular after a ratty summer to tease me.
Just what went into creating this new map? Does it figure on rainfall,
too?
