Hal, I don't know what yhour mystery plant is. Until the latter part of the
description I wondered if it was the variegated leaf brunnera. Does it look
something like a hosta?
I bought a plant at a nursery last year that no one there could tell me what
it was. The tag simply said "perennial". They thought it might be a
flowering tobacco but I knew better. It had fire engine red tubular flowers,
something like the lipstick plant, in a ring at the top of its stems. The
leaves are yeart-shaped and slightly fuzzy. Certainly not a nicotiana!
I took it home and went I planted it out I saw that it was a corm, round and
orange. After much searching I discovered it was a syninga rechsteineria.
It's a beauty and I dug the corm in the late fall, stored it, and it is now
in bloom for the second year. This same nursery does not have anything like
it this year.
So hang in there. After it flowers perhaps you'll find it pictured somewhere.
