Pottsey,
Those green flower buds with the triangular black marks remind me very much of
my perennial Centaurea montana buds, but mine open to a definite blue flower
(mountain bluets, the common name, I think), and they are just starting to bloom
now. The leaves of this one are fuzzy light green, smooth edged, oblong and
about 1 1/4 inches wide and 4 1/2 inches long tapering to a point. There is a
good picture in the spring White Flower Farm catalog. I know there is a white C.
montana out there -- could there be a pink one?
The Thompson & Morgan catalog mentions a perennial C. dealbata with white,
centered with rosy pink, but there's no illustration!
The annual centaureas or cornflowers come in pinks, red and purples, and from
what I can tell from catalog pictures, the flowers look sort of similar, but
smaller and fuller.
