Has anyone else noticed that if you don't get the bedding plants as soon as
they come off of the truck they won't be worth a plug nickel a week later?
These big chains hire part-time kids to look over the garden center and no
one knows anything about stocking, care, or anything. I've seen shade
plants out baking in full sun. Plants so overgrown that they look sickly.
Things mislabeled, in sore need of watering, or even through blooming for
the year but still at full price. Not worth my money!
The mom-n-pop's know that if they don't keep their stock fresh, they must
eat the cost. Not only that, but the people actually know what they are
selling and how to take care of it. Since I've gone beyond the gaudy,
overbred petunias and the pom-pom marigolds, I like the smaller nurseries
for the "good stuff". And I'm willing to pay the extra premium for the
healthy plants.
