Late summer/fall flowers

Nan,
How about the salvias? Here in San Jose mine bloom well into the
early winter (such that it is, I know) and there are some that start blooming
in winter. Those we have to protect, otherwise they never bloom because
the frosts get them, but they are really stunning when nothing else is blooming.
Betsy Clebsch's book is excellent, and I think that I remember that
she got started on salvias because she had a second home in the Bay Area
that was not irrigated and she needed drought-tolerant plants. I would think
that they would be perfect for San Diego.
