Janet:
English Ivy will grow up, into and over anything that isn't moving.
I have it in pine trees, spruce trees, willows, ....................
I pull it out, my neighbors plant it.
A number of years ago, we moved into a brick house that had ivy covering
the entire east side of the house. Deciding that the ivy was mkaing the
brick hold water, my husband and brother decided to tear it off one
weekend. The stuff was so thick, the stems easily 3" in diameter.
Unable to cut through it from the bottom, they decided to crawl out the
attic windows (3rd floor), push it away from wall, and then chop it away
from the wall. In effect, they rode it to the ground.
In tearing it apart, we discovered two large trellises had been
completely hidden by it.
Your sister-in-law can safely use the word pine or oak in her poem.
