We've finally had the killing frosts so today I must go and cut down the
dahlias and a few other things and add them to the compost pile.
Yes the romneya coulteri is hard to propagate. A single stemmed plant here
sells for $15.00 Canadian. A friend did successfully dig up and give to me
3 or 4 rooted slips which did survive. I believe it was in the spring but
as it was a few years ago I can't be sure. In this area, zone 8, we cut
them back to the ground in the spring. Mine has spread a bit and I would
suggest if you're taking the plant to start with the newest shoots
furtherest away and pot them all up individually. The grower here lost all
their starts last year but does have around 1500 successful starts for next
years sales. A clerk in the nursery advised me to spread charcoal around
the plant. Not ashes, but the actual charred bits after a fire. I have read
that you must set the seeds in a pan and actually burn them so I guess this
follows. I wouldn't expect all your bits to survive so don't give any away
till you establish your own planting.
good luck.
