Re: the quiet gardeners/ Violets

I've had Freckles violet for several years. I agree...it is so cute. I
have a variety of violets in the garden, some desirable, some absolute
pests. My favorites are Freckles and Confederate (I think)...it's white
with blue center. A persnickity one that tends to die out is a wild yellow
one. It doesn't seem to multiply and must be a short-lived perennial. I
had birdsfoot violet for years but lost it. It flourished for about 5
years, then suddenly disappeared. I found it growing all over a sandy knoll
where we bought a tract of standing timber....had no water or digging
implement. Carefully pulled some up, brought them home with roots in 7-up
sodapop. Worked great. Also have what I believe is viola tricolor. My
father-in-law called these "Johnny Jump Ups"....miniature pansies in a
variety of color combinations. One is near-black....it's gorgeous.

I'm in northern Indiana....the temperature this a.m. was l7 degrees and
"spitting snow". I'm not ready for winter, but guess it's time to settle
down with the seed & nursery catalogs and start dreaming about next year's
flower garden.

I enjoy the perennials list.
