Re: favorite fragrances in the garden

I consider fragrance when I choose plants and am partial to licorice and
lemon scents. Before the dreaded borers devastated my iris plantings, I
had many with unusual fragrances and belonged to a iris fragrance round
robin wherein we sniffed our blossoms and reported on what it smelled like
and how strong (on a scale from 1 to 10). I had irises that smelled like
lemon, orange, cinnamon, chocolate, grape, baby powder, pineapple, clove,
nutmeg, the restroom deoderizer at our local Arby's restroom, vanilla,
coconut, gardenia, licorice, and even some nasty smelling ones. I think my
favorites were lemon and chocolate. I like lemon and licorice scented herbs
(lemon verbena, anise hyssop, etc). Also the different scents of mint
although I think its stretching it a bit to assign scents such as orange,
chocolate, etc to the mints. I like daylily fragrances too, but there's
little difference in those that do have a scent. Most of mine don't.

It seems many of the new hybrids often sacrifice scent for beauty or
abundance of blooms. This is certainly true in irises.

I'm interested in hearing what others have to say on this subject of garden
fragrance.
