Daylily rust

Hi Everyone,
Thought I would share some information on the dreaded daylily rust gleaned
from the Oregon Association of Nurserymen magazine "The Digger". The wait
is over....Daylily rust has made it to the west coast pretty fast. The
first verified case was found in Georgia in August 2000. As of September
2001, it has been verified in 22 other states and parts of Canada. Like
some other fungal diseases, the fungus needs an alternate host to complete
its life cycle. The genus Patrinia is the alternate host. I am grateful I
didn't succumb to the desire to purchase a lovely big pot of Patrinia this
season. But doggone it, I do love my Daylilies!
There is a short list of resistant cultivars - Butterscotch Ruffles, Holy
Spirit, Mac the Knife and Yangtze. There is a much longer list of highly
susceptible cultivars - Attribution, Butterflake, Colonel Scarborough,
Crystal Tide, Double Buttercup, Gertrude Condon, Irish Ice, Joan Senior,
Karie Ann, Lemon Yellow, Little Gypsy Vagabond, Lord of the Storm, Ming Toy,
Pandora's Box, Pardon Me, Prelude to Love, Quannan, Russian Rhapsody,
Starstruck, Stella D'Oro, and Wilson's Yellow. Pardon Me is the cultivar on
which the rust was first found in this country.
The article suggests that you isolate any newly purchased daylilies for at
least a month to make sure they are disease free. It also states that so
far it appears only the leaves become infected, not the crowns, so if you
find orange pustules, leaves & scapes should be removed and the crown
treated with fungicide. Infected plant parts should not be composted of
course.

Here's hoping the unsightly orange pustules don't find your prize daylilies!
