My problem was always with desiccation. The only dahlia that I
currently keep is a smaller, red-foliaged variety, 'Bednall Beauty'.
I keep it permanently potted, storing it for the winter in my
basement. However, I realize this is not an option for those who
plant dahlias in the ground.
The secret seems to be humidity. A friend of mine has what would be
aptly called a root cellar - an enclosed, unheated room in his
basement. He can store his dahlia tubers and others such as callas
out in the open on shelves and they store PERFECTLY. This room
evidently has the near perfect combination of temperature and
humidity. Unfortunately, I've never had the opportunity to quantify
the exact values.
