Just sharing our experience with monarda - a plant which I love.
Our first was the red (Cambridge Scarlet) which was gorgeous the first
season, but mildewed and went to bare stalk quickly. The second season it
did not thrive as well, and the third season we had very few blooms. I plan
to move it out of the garden and onto the edge of our woods, where it will
not be so visible when it dies out.
The next, Raspberry Wine, has been much more successful. It did mildew
slightly, but in three seasons has provided continual bloom and bare stalks
were not as prominent as the red.
Then we found Marshall's Delight two years ago. Amazing! The first year it
was full and covered in flowers - this past summer season it was so dense;
flowers were gorgeous and long lasting. When I pruned it some, it
re-bloomed, and up until the first hard frost was still a mass of green
leaves - no mildew! This is a plant I would like to have much more of,
based on this experience. Three small plants grew into a "bush" almost 8
feet wide and 5 feet tall!
We tried a variety LAMBADA two years ago. Very pretty, flowers in "towers"
and bloomed well that year. This year it never came up at all.
For the first time this year we had a dwarf variety - Petite Delight -
which was truly a delight. A low spreading plant with magnificent flowers.
I am hoping that comes back next year. I would like to plant the Petite
Delight in front of the Marshall's Delight in a border. However, the
Marshall's Delight blooms actually covered the plants from ground up, so
you did not need any planting in front to cover the stalks.
Hope this is useful to someone dealing with the issues of monarda
varieties..... :-)
