Re: dahlia tubers

I have been successfully keeping dahlia tubers over the winter here in
NYS zone 5ish, and have finessed the procedure down to:

after taking them out of the ground, leave them for a few days in any
open basket
in a dim dry spot to dry out;

then clean them off, do not break apart the bunches, and put them in a
cardboard box more or less in one layer, so you need several boxes
depending on how many tubers you have, and then the boxes get their tops
put on, and are put away in the dark, where they won't get direct heat
but won't be in freezing temperatures, and where it is dry;

in the spring I have found many of my bunches are sprouting little tiny
white nubs; wherever there are these nubs you have a live plant, and I
plant them separately;

although I do keep the tubers that are alone, having broken off a bunch,
I don't remember that any of these sprouted.
