Hi,
Good to see you discussing our seeds and how they perform for you. We are
getting quite a good handle on the way they stand up to the various climates in
the USA now and pleased to see that you are having success with them
A couple of folk wrote to me with questions in the past few days so I will post the
replies below:
Will they grow in zone 9?
USDA zones (it is USDA you are referring to?) can be a little misleading.
Delphiniums do like cool climates but here in Wanganui, New Zealand, we are
also zone 9 and our hybrids last well as perennials. In fact they did ok in zone 10
before we shifted. What usually causes problems is the heat zone. On the AHS
Plant Heat Zone Map we have reports of perenniality up to zone 7 but there is
great variability and heat zone 6 is usually the more reliable measure. Good
culture there should give several years of excellent returns although they will
need tlc if the summer is hot and prolonged.
Without doubt they perform better where the summer climate is temperate and the
winters provide steady temperatures below 55degF for three months or so.
Are the New Zealand Hybrids offered by T&M the same as ours?
Yes, and yes, we do have seed for white flowers with black bees.
I have also posted some information about a project to raise funds for world wide
polio eradication, using our delphinium seed. This is a good way for you to test
our hybrids and also help to add the final nails in the coffin for polio.
cheers
