It can cost a good amount of money to heat a green house over the winter and
not all prairie plants grow best under the same conditions-some grow real
well under cool conditions and the green house can be kept cool (50-65 F)
others like the grasses need warm temps to grow well (75-80F) If you are
using a small pot -- overgrowing the pot can be a problem. (As a side not I
have some Iron weed in 2.1/4 inch pots that have been in those pots for five
years and each year they grow 5- to 6 feet tall and flower nicely, talk about
over grown. Hopefully this spring I will get them moved to a one gallon pot.)
If you do not mind another suggestion-start the seeds in mid summer and when
winter comes keep them dormant (they can be grown in a semi heated green
house until the end on November) -- in the spring the plants will be ready to
take on any cold you get in the spring and they will grow faster and become
larger plants -- plus most should bloom the same year. The advantages are
many -- the seedlings will grow nice and large during the cool of fall and
the heating costs are much less, plants will be vernilized and flower the
next season and they will have greater cold tolerance in the spring.
