Hello Paul,
Lots of disagreement on hardiness of Acanthus species. Much of the
literature still goes with zone 7. Some is picking up zone 6, occasionally
one will go with zone 5 on A. hungaricus. I transplanted two nice sized A.
hungaricus two years back to my garden. Winters have been mild, but the
plants did increase and bloom for me this past summer.
A friend brought me a start of one of the other species (he could not
remember which one he had) and I sat the pot in my cold frame until I could
figure out were to place it in the garden. Well... you know how that one
goes. Went to pick it up about a year later and could not break it loose.
Roots had left the pot, gone through a brick floor (ones with holes) and
formed a complete root system. Had to cut the pot loose with a shovel. Now
have lots of Acanthus plants in the corner of my cold frame. Still have not
found a home for the one give to me......
You will see lots of roots from the bottom of your seedling pot long
before it gets out of hand above the pot.
