I find if I use the "fine" paint pens they fades, but the medium tip ones last years. Also, I lightly sand the label with a kitchen scrubber. (those are handier than finding sandpaper or steel wool). I have some 6 and 7 year old markers and I have rugged weather.Monica - I use a mechanical pencil with .75 or .5 lead. The best BY FAR. I write the cultivar name on both ends of the stake. The name stuck into the ground NEVER fades. I've also tried: china marker -fine point unavailable but it lasts Sharpies - faded after 2 years paint pens - faded after a year and expensive
