AH! there is this wonderful stuff called CitraSolve - look for it in the "natural food" section if it isn't in the cleaner section. Takes off hockey tape and ancient cellotape. I'll bet it makes mince meat of the p-touch labels.

Yes, but removing permanent adhesive labels from the plates is a little
tougher, especially if they've been on a few years.  Someone mentioned
soaking them, but that doesn't seem to help much - those P-Touch labels are
meant to stay!  Besides, my fingernails  don't amount to much.

 I've found a quick scrub with IPA takes off what ever I've written on
 the plate.
