Note to Isabelle and others in zone 5:
It all goes to show that there are such things as microclimates within a
zone. Zone 5 for NY is different from a zone 5 in southern Indiana. I
suppose that's why some zone maps I've seen refer to things as "zone 5a" or
"5b", etc. Could be snow in NY now, no frost in IN.
I live in the Ohio River Valley, smack dead between zones 5 and 6. No hard
frost yet, so my fall bloomers are all hanging on with sparse blooms
despite low temps in the 30's. Dahlias in a sheltered location are
monstrous in size and are still trying to bloom, although more sporadically
as the days go by.
