Another Dahlia Question

Someone said that they put their dahlias in pots in March (Isabelle?).
What size pots? My tubers are so long that I don't have many pots that
will allow me to fan these things out. Since some are shaped like sweet
potatoes, is it safe just to put them in a pot vertically with the eye
above ground?
I've also been advised to start them in flats. Will this allow enough
depth for good root formation?
