I live in the lower part of zone 7. Here, we have to chill tulip
bulbs for about 8 weeks before planting to get them to bloom. (Well,
species tulips don't need to be chilled, but I didn't think you were
talking about them). Since tulips here are treated as annuals
because of their chilling requirements, I don't plant them in perennial
beds.
I do plant other bulbs with my perennials. I've found that daffodils
do particularly well here as well as the species tulips.
