Amaryllis belladona /advise needed

Fellow listers,
Hope someone out there can tell me from their experience if its possible
to outdoor grow this lovely bulb flower..I grew up with this flower
(must milder climate too)and would like very much to succeed with
growing it here.

I have conflicting info regarding its zone limitations.Sunset reads zone
4 this is Sunset zone 3/USDA 6.Other sources even read higher, zone
8(USDA).

So my thought was to place a full bale of straw over planted bulb to
insulate against freezing.

If anyone knows or has first hand knowledge it would be very reassuring.

Grateful for any clues/tips.
