Please stop the bickering. I created this list as a resource for people
interested in perennial gardening, not as a medium for electronic debate.
The most important thing about this list is respecting the opinions of
others. Remember that each person receiving your message is an individual
with many different experiences and ideas behind them. Without this
diversity, lists would be boring and meaningless.
When responding to someone, think about how someone different from you
might perceive your message. Talking down to them could hurt their
feelings. Sending it in a special format could make it difficult to
read, etc.
Some people think that as the listowner I have the power to tell people
what to do here. I don't. I _do_ ask people to change their
behavior to make this environment more beneficial to us all, but
they don't have to listen to me. This is their choice as a human
being with free will.
However, I also have the "power" to remove people from the list at
will. I have only blocked one person from a list in the past because
of repeated abusive language, and I hope never to do it again. But
if I feel that someone has overstepped their bounds and didn't listen
to a warning, I will institute these procedures.
This list is about perennial gardening. Remember this paragraph that
was sent when you subscribed?
This list is dedicated to the discussion of all perennials plants
in a garden design context. Special attention is paid to the
ornamental qualities of the plants, although questions regarding
propagation, diseases, and other areas will be covered.
If you have questions about something or a user's behavior bothers
you, send me mail directly. My address is 'lindsey@mallorn.com'.
I almost always reply and act on the messages in a discrete manner.
Thanks,
Chris
P.S. One last thing. I don't think that people necessarily "belong"
on one list or another. But they should respect the culture
and community atmosphere of a list. Remember that each list
is different, and you will always be welcome if you
follow that list's guidelines.
