Johnny Jump-ups are a type of viola that have a very small (1" or so)
pansy like flower. They come in shades of yellow blue and purple and all
sorts of combinations of the three colors. They grow about 1 foot tall,
but start flowering very early on when no more than 2 or 3 inches tall.
In the summer they will get quite leggy and at that point I will usually
pull them up since they set seed quite nicely and I always have a "crop"
of them going! I brought a few plants with me when we moved here 11 1/2
years ago. Now they are all over my yard and my neighbor's yards! I
think they are quite nice for spring filler until the other perennials
get going or I decide to pull some to make room for an annual. But best
of all is that they will bloom in the late fall and early spring often
blooming before the snow drops and crocus!
