Don, Helleborus are, in my experience,  quite hardy and should fare  well
outside if you can harden them off gradually before the serious winter
weather sets in.  How about putting them in a coldframe?  Another trick I
have used when short on storage space is to plant pots in the compost pile.
I have kept some tender Salvias going with no ill effect that way.
