Barbara,
I have a cousin that just moved from texas to tenn. She had mentioned
several times about the "black soil" that she couldn't dig in. My
suggestion to you would be to check at the local nurserys and see what
they sell. That is usually the best way to find out what is "hardy" in
your area. You'll still have to check with trial and error. Here they
love to sell Delphineums, which croak due to the high humidity. Try
growing Texas natives, they Will Grow for you. Try these organizations:
Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute
PO Box 1334
Alpine, TX 79831
El Paso Native Plant Society
7760 Maya Ave.
El Paso TX 79912
Native Plant Society of Texas
PO Box 891
Georgetown Tx 78627
Tel. 512-863-7794
Native Prairies Assoc. of Texas
3503 Lafayette Ave
Austin TX 78722-1807
Tel.512-327-5437 or476-1663 eve.
Good luck and enjoy your new challenge.
Sally
