RE: digitalis


xmertonensis is the hybrid between D. purpurea x D. grandiflora.  It is
probably an amphidiploid, which means that the chromosome number doubled
after the interspecific hybridization.  What this does is allow the genomes
of each individual species to pair during meiosis, thus producing fertile
eggs and pollen.  In the simplest terms, it makes good fertile seed.
