  I think you might have something there about the fertilizer.  The first
summer
 I grew Delphiniums I didn't lose any.  I also didn't fertilize much.  The
 second year I grew them I fertilized and lost all of them during the summer
 even though they were in a shady spot.  The second summer got about 5 degrees
 hotter so I am not sure if what killed them was the heat or the fertilizer.
 Any comments from anyone?<<
 
 Lillian,  My guess would be it was the heat, especially if there were

In my experance Delphiniums need very rich soil- but do not like dry soils.
They do best for me in Moist well drained soils were I have to fertilize them
three times as much as any other plant I have grown. They like sun but some
cool shade at the bootom of the plant- Kind of like clematis.

Exactly!  That is a nice, concise explanation.  That has been my experience,
too.
If you follow those points, growing delphiniums is easy, and rewarding.
