Duncan and Mary have already provided some great information about forcing
bulbs so I'll just add some of my experience.
Mary mentioned that she has only used hyacinths that were specically for
forcing. As she suspects, they are indeed "pre-chilled."
I chill my bulbs in the refrigerator. Yeah it's weird but everyone around
here is used to finding weird thing in the fridge.
Occasionally, I've notied that the bulbs seem to "stall" in developing top
growth. That is, they aren't as tall as the should after 6 or 8 weeks in
the cold. If they have good root growth (See Duncan's email), I take them
out and place them in diffuse light and they usually take off.
